IL PROGETTO

chiedo ad un po' di amici se sarebbero disponibili a remixare i miei
pezzi.
aderiscono 28 entità/gruppi di diverso genere: da professionisti
della musica digitale a gruppi che l'elettronica non l'hanno mai affrontata,
gruppi che suonano strumenti elettrici, o strumenti acustici, gruppi
che suonano con elettrodomestici, o con giochi o altri strumenti più
o meno convenzionali.
le regole: vale qualsiasi tipo di strumento, vale tutto, c'è
solo una deadline da rispettare. sui master non verrà effettuata
post-produzione, verranno pubblicati così come arrivano.

mi vengono consegnati i remix e, non essendo un contest, non ho eletto
un vincitore.
essendo la mia musica totalmente copyleft, in questo lavoro non c'è
nessuno scopo a fini commerciali nè intenzione di pubblicare
supporti per la diffusione.
come mezzo di diffusione ho scelto internet.
il motivo principale è che permette multimedialità ed
ubiquità oltre ad offrire la possibilità per il progetto
di restare a disposizione a tempo indeterminato: quello che ne esce
è una sorta di mostra multimediale permanente con la possibilità
di portare a casa una copia delle opere.
per la visualizzazione è predisposto un player on-line, che suona
in streaming gli mp3 delle tracce e ad esso viene associato un kaleidoscopio
colorato.
I COLORI
tramite il player ogni remix viene inserito in un analizzatore di frequenze.
queste sono state associate a 18 colori, prendendo come riferimento
la scala cromatica dell'arcobaleno.
le frequenze più basse sono state associate al rosso e le più
alte al violetto, passando per una scala cromatica di 16 bande di frequenza..
l'intensità di queste frequenze determina l'intensità
del colore ad esse associato.
i remix vengono riprodotti in streaming visualizzando cromaticamente
le frequenze.
alla fine dell'ascolto un sensore avrà rilevato statisticamente
l'uso di ogni frequenza e ci indicherà di che colore è
ogni remix, partendo dal nero (assenza di colore), mixando i 16 colori
usati fino ad arrivare al bianco (tutti i colori insieme) e misurando
l'intensità e la frequenza di utilizzo di ogni associazone cromatica.
questi remix, come qualsiasi suono, come i colori, sono vibrazioni allo
stato puro, e sono unici. il loro colore è la foto dell'unicità
del brano.

IL FRULLATORE
simbolo di questo progetto, sin dalla
partenza, è stato un frullatore.
questo non vuole sminuire la professionalità e bravura dei partecipanti.
il motivo è che nella sua semplicità "domestica"
rappresenta lo spirito del progetto: do it yourself, fattelo in casa,
fallo e basta, anche buttando il cd di campioni nel frullatore.

ha fatto crashare il sistema troppe volte :) , questo deve essere dovuto
semplicemente alla durata del pezzo. per cui il remix che c'è
nel player è stato tagliato. quello completo è scaricabile
nell'area dei downloads.

felice di aver sentito cose inaspettate, di aver sentito suonare persone
inaspettate, di aver avuto il privilegio di sentire le proprie tracce

Stefano ci ha lasciati poco prima di poter vedere questo progetto finito.

THE PROJECT

I asked some of my friends if they would be interested in remixing my
tracks
28 entities/groups decided to take part. all come from very different
experiences: from professionals of electronics to people who had never
approached electronic music before, from people who usually play with
weird analog instruments such as blenders or vacuum cleaners, to more
conventional groups, etc...
the rules: use what you want, there are no rules, just a deadline. no
kind of post production will be done on the master, it will be used
as you send it.

I got all the remix-masters back from the friends who are now 24 in
total.
this is not a contest so there is no winner to elect, none of this music
will be published and there are no commercial ends to this project,
according to a034 music which is copyright-free.
the MEDIUM is the internet.
the reason is that it's the only medium which can give us multimediality
and ubiquity, it offers the possibility to be in the same place for
an undetermined amount of time: what comes out is a sort of permanent
multimedial-exhibition which lets users to take home a personal copy
of the works.
for visualization we decided to work on a multimedia player and a kaleidoscope...
and we developed a system which is able to real-time stream the mp3s
associated to graphic animation.
COLOURS
through the online player each remix is put into a sort of frequency
analyser.
we split each track into 16 different frequency bands and associated
them to 16 colors, starting from RED (basses) going to VIOLET (highs)...
we used the rainbow colour scale.
the intensity of each frequency determines the intensity of each colour,
and the two are combined to animate a simple graphic.
the remix is reproduced in streaming visualising the frequencies according
to the colour. At the end, through the "sensor" which measures
the use of each frequency, the individual colour of each track is produced.
the colour scheme goes from black (the absence of colour), through the
16 colours, to white (all the colours together).
as a stand-alone, a pure and unique vibration, music generates its own
colour, different for each track.

THE BLENDER
from the beginning the symbol of the
remix project has always been a blender.
this is not to undermine the professionality of the musicians involved,
but because its domestic simplicity represents the mood of this whole
project: do it yourself, do it at home, even just by throwing your Cd
of samples in the blender. you never know what might come out... so
why not do it.
